For new, aspirant & current middle leaders

The Middle Leadership Programme will help participants to:
  • develop a clear understanding of the difference between leadership and management
  • establish effective teams and support them towards outstanding learning and teaching
  • identify gaps in pupil achievement and explore strategies to overcome these
  • gain a greater understanding of the use of school data to close the gap according to school improvement priorities
  • understand how to lead and sustain successful change to support school improvement priorities
  • appreciate the importance of sustaining ‘self’ in order to be an effective leader

The programme offers elements of the exisiting full National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML)

Participants will carry out a school based project, developing their leadership competencies and putting elements of the programme in to practice. 

Participant will need a school-based coach who can meet them regularly.

Leading and managing school improvement

  • Defining leadership & management and behaviours
  • Exploring the gaps, including within-school variation
  • Using data to identify gaps in learner outcomes

Leading teaching and learning

  • What makes teaching & learning high quality?
  • Modelling, monitoring & dialogue: influencing high quality practice

Leading and sustaining successful change

  • Models of change
  • Barriers & levers to successful change
  • Dealing with resistance & holding others to account

Leading an effective team

  • Leading through trust
  • Growing individual & team capacity
  • Stages of team development
  • Sustaining self and others
